Frequently Asked Questions
Or, not really frequently asked questions. Whatever.
- Why do you call yourself an overeducated geek?
Because I have a B.S. in Mechanincal Engineering and Applied
Mathematics, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering Design, and a PhD in
Computer Science.
- Okay, you're certainly overeducated. Just how geeky are you?
I own two Amiga computers which I no longer use, but are still functional. I have three
P.C. clones I built myself. They are networked, though they are all
located under the same desk. Two of the computers are in rack-mount
cases. All three are hooked up to a KVM (keyboard/video/mouse) switch
so I can access any of them. The computer I use to abuse Usenet
strictly runs
Windows 2000 server, my fastest computer is dual boot Windoze/Linux,
and my old slow computer is strictly Linux.
- Jeebus, you're nuts. Why three computers?
The first one, a 450mhz Pentium, I built to replace my aging and quite
slow Amiga. The Amiga could not run a modern operating system simply
because it didn't have enough memory or CPU power. The second, a
1.4mhz AMD Thunderbird, I built because I decided my old computer was
too slow to do anything useful. The third, a XP 2200+, I built to do
the experiments for my thesis, since the 1.4 was already being used
full-time for Usenet abuse. I have my priorities.
- Are you through yet?
No. This FAQ was lovingly handcoded in html. I don't use html
editors to build my web pages. It's all strictly me and whatever html
tags I have memorized.
- Why Cranky-D?
If you knew me, you'd understand.
- Why hide your identity?
I want to get employment in the defense industry, which will probably
require a security clearance. They don't care for people spouting
off. Come to think of it, people in normal jobs have been fired for
having blogs that say things some might find objectionable. I would
rather avoid the situation. Any opinion expressed here has been
expressed to anyone within earshot, so I'm not afraid of expressing
myself.
- Why do you write about X? Why don't you write about
Y?
I write about whatever catches my fancy. It might be personal, or
political, or whatever. I am at my best when I keep things
interesting to me. If I start worrying about what people want to
read, that will be the first step on the road to quitting.
- Can I ask some questions instead of just reading the ones you
made up?
Certainly. Just email me, david -at- cranky-d -dot- com. Be anonymous
if you want, snag a junk email account, whatever. If you ask a good
question, I'll update this piece of poop.
